What is and isn’t okay to use from social media (in my humble opinion)

I want to make the Price family website as interesting and inviting as possible, so I try to include photographs wherever I can. It’s a big help that there are a ton of photos out there in cyberspace.

Many of my Price cousins have posted their photos copiously on social media, and I have used some of those thousands of publicly accessible photos on this website.

Here are the self-imposed rules that guide me as I do this. I invite the feedback of all you Price family members as to whether this is appropriate or not.

  1. Photos on social media that are not accessible to the public If a family member has posted a photograph to social media with restrictions that hide it from the world at large, then that tells me they are not necessarily okay with having it seen by the world at large. This includes, for example, Facebook photos that are visible to friends or private group members only. If a photo is in this category, I have sought permission before including it on this website.
  2. Photos on social media that are accessible to the public If a family member has posted a photograph to social media without restrictions to hide it from the world at large, then this tells me that they are okay with having it seen by the world at large. This includes, for example, Facebook or LinkedIn photos that are visible to the public (as opposed to friends or private group members only). If a photo is in this category, I have not necessarily sought permission before including it on this website.
  3. Photos on social media for which the family member says “no” If a family member has posted a photograph to social media, and subsequently asks me not to use it on the website, then I will respect that request.
  4. Photos on social media posted by third parties If a family member appears in a photograph that someone else has posted to social media, and asks me not to use it on the website, then I will respect that request.
  5. Photos of children If a family member asks me not to use a photograph of their child or children, then I will respect that request.

So, Price family members, does that seem reasonable to you?

Please speak up. I don’t want to get this wrong.
